What is an adequate translation?

One that realizes in the target language the textual relationship of a ST with no breach of its own basic linguistic system.

Acceptability

Adherence to norms which originate and act in the target language itself

Some precepts of adequacy

Translation act attempts to reflect the ST; Norms and features and particular traditions of SL are consequently embodied in TT; Likely to result in incomatibilities with normal TC practices

Some precepts of acceptability

Target language norms have precedence; SL features are pushed to a secondary position

Set of relationships that distinguish the appropriate modes of translation performance for the culture in question
